Great Wall of China between Jinshanling and Simatai
Part of the Great Wall of China between Jinshanling and Simatai From Beijing we made a daytrip to the Great Wall of China. We went to Jinshanling by micro bus and from there we walked up to the Great Wall and over the wall to Simatai (few kilometers southeast of Jinshanling and around 150 km North East of Beijing). During the walk we passed many watch towers and had excellent views of the spectacular surroundings.

Great Hall of the People
The Great Hall of the People in Beijing The Great Hall of the People is a state building west of Tiananmen Square in Beijing. It is used for legislative and ceremonial activities by the government of China. As you can derive from the small size of the people standing on the chairs to the entrance of the building, the Great Hall is really great. The Great Hall of the People consists of three sections, the central part includes the Great Auditorium, with can simultaneously seat 10,000 representatives.

The Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, Tiananmen Square, Beijing The Mausoleum of Mao Zedong (or Chairman Mao Memorial Hall) is the final resting place of Mao Zedong, the chairman of the Communist Party of China, who died on September 9, 1976. An enormous building which, given Mao’s wish to be cremated, is quite unusual. His wish was ignored and his body was embalmed and mummified. China’s leaders believed that his body should be preserved for posterity.

Gatehouse Zhengyangmen, Tiananmen Square, Beijing
Gatehouse Zhengyangmen This 42 meters tall gatehouse is situated to the south of Tiananmen Square and once guarded the southern entry into the Inner City. Zhengyangmen was first build during the Ming dynasty in the early years of the 15th century. On this hot summer day, hundreds of swallows flew around the gate. In this photo you can see them as tiny black dots against the blue sky.

Temple of Heaven, Beijng
The Temple of Heaven in Beijng Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the largest building in the Temple of Heaven. The complex was visited by the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for a good harvest. The temple complex was constructed in the beginning of the 15th century during the Ming Dynasty. The Temple of Heaven is located few kilometers south of Tiananmen Square.

First View of the Great Wall of China
During the last stop before Beijing, we unexpectedly got our first view of The Great Wall of China from the train. Unfortunately it was foggy and / or there was a lot of smog. Zaisan Memorial, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Zaisan Memorial, in the in the duureg of Khan-Uul, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia The Zaisan Memorial is a memorial located on a hilltop in Ulaanbaatar just south of the Tuul River. The monument honors allied Mongolian and Soviet soldiers killed in World War II. From the Zaisan Memorial visitors have great views of the entire city of Ulaanbaatar and the Tuul river.

Turtle Rock in Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, Mongolia
The “Turtle Rock” is a well known land mark in the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, Mongolia Terelj is one of the most visited national parks of Mongolia. This is mainly due to its proximity to Ulaanbaatar the capital of Mongolia. However, it is a beautiful park and a good place for hiking and horseback riding. It’s also possible to spend the night in traditional Ger of Yurt tents.

Erdene Zuu Monastery, Kharkhorin, Mongolia
Dark clouds above the Erdene Zuu Monastery near Kharkhorin in Mongolia Erdene Zuu is the oldest Buddhist monastery (dating back to the end of the 16th century) in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The complex forms a square of 400 by 400 meters. It is surrounded by a 7.5 meter high wall in which 108 stupas are incorporated. The complex is largely empty, as most of the buildings were demolished in 1939 by order of the communist leader Khorloogiin Choibalsan.
